Parents swear this swaddle helps their babies fall asleep

Liz Hilton hadn’t expected how difficult it would be to settle into a good sleep routine after having her first baby. Like many new parents, she had tried swaddling her newborn.

Research has shown that wrapping babies in a snug blanket can help mimic the feeling of the womb. A properly wrapped swaddle should soothe and relax a newborn, and can even help promote sleep — something most parents are desperate for.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swaddles and swaddle sacks for babies until they can roll over on their own, and most parents learn how to swaddle their babies before they even leave the hospital. Just last year, the swaddle industry surpassed $325 million.

But for Hilton, swaddling wasn’t all that simple. Her baby was a little escape artist. She’d tried a variety of swaddles, but nothing seemed to hold him in. He would wiggle right out — what she called a “veritable Houdini.”

After struggling to find a brand that would work, Hilton decided to make one of her own. She already had an idea of what type of swaddle she wanted to make; it had to be escape-proof, soft, stretchy, breathable, safe, and comfortable.

The new mom also had plenty of previous experience with 3D kitting. She had worked as an educator and consultant in technical knitting and garment design, and much of her focus was on creating compression garments for children with lymphedema and cerebral palsy.

So, she used her knitwear manufacturing company, KNITit, to develop the “Swaddelini,” a swaddle that features trademarked Hug Technology, which delivers a hug sensation all night long.

Hilton launched the Swaddelini in 2018. By 2021, the baby product had gone viral. Moms told moms they swore by it, nurses were intrigued by it, and suddenly it became known as the swaddle for babies who don’t like swaddles.

Parents everywhere have turned to Swaddelini. “This swaddle rules,” one mom shared about the Sleep Sack. “It comforts our baby and helps them get settled for sleep. Definitely helps build a sleep routine, too.”

In addition to helping soothe tossers and turners, the intuitive design of the Swaddelini also makes it easier for parents to change their babies.

“I tried velcro swaddles and hated them because my newborn son could get his arms up and out so easily,” wrote another parent. “This swaddle prevents that completely so you don’t need to worry about them getting out and then waking.”

Given the success of the Sleep Sack, Hilton has rolled out a variety of swaddle options — from super-soft bamboo blankets to ‘arms out’ options, pint-sized preemie wraps, lightweight summer swaddles, and even knit designs with openings for tube feeding.
