Manish Sisodia Walks Free Again

Consequent to the decision of the Supreme Court, Manish Sisodia walked out of the jail after being incarcerated for 17 months. The observations of the Supreme Court are pretty harsh on the investigating agency as well as the lower court. Manish Sisodia’s case (perhaps many more such cases in the recent past) needs a detailed analyses regarding the law relating to grant of bail. Earlier the understanding and the law was pretty clear that denial of bail would be only in exceptional set of circumstance. It seemed to have changed  though the Supreme Court has now reiterated the rule of “exception”. It is difficult to fathom why the lower courts are treating denial as a rule than otherwise? Is Manish Sisodia a hardened criminal? The Government of NCT has been rendered toothless. How can Manish Sisodia tamper with evidence? If the investigating agency doesn’t have in its possession documentary evidence to nail Manish Sisodia, it reflects poorly on its efficiency.  Comparisons are odius but isn’t it ironical that the likes of Brij Bhishan Singh are not even arrested and allowed to roam around free and Manish Sisodia languishes behind the bars.

In my recently released book, “Encounters with Politicians”, this is what I have to say about Manish Sisodia:

“Manish Sisodia represents a rare set of individuals who perform irrespective of the set of circumstances. He did so in an environment that was hostile, with the Union Government attempting to control everything in the State where he was the Deputy Chief Minister also looking after the Education sector. What he did to school education in Delhi was nothing short of a miracle that came to be recognized world over much to the chagrin of his detractors.

I had spoken to Manish Sisodia on a number of occasions during my tenure as Secretary, School Education and Literacy, Government of India during 2016-2018. As mentioned earlier, all was not well between the Central and the State Government but this adverse relationship did not come in the way of our interaction. I met him for the first time at a conference organized by us. It was he who approached me for some guidance on a particular issue and heard me out as I gave him one. This was contrary to his opinion on the issue that had a few political overtones. My suggestion was to keep politics away from education. He came around to my point of view. We continued to remain in touch despite the fact that I had some reservations about the manner in which his boss, Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister was conducting himself. I did give him an unsolicited advice of not unnecessarily opening battle-fronts in all directions and focusing on what they could do as a government for the welfare of the people. I don’t really know whether he or his boss heeded to the advice.”

Whatever little I have seen of Manish Sisodia, I found in him a pretty committed and down-to-earth person. He was lauded all over for the good work that he was doing but he kept his feet firmly on the ground
